Hackintosh Installation & Usability Videos

These videos provide a quick overview of the installation of Mac OS X on a Dell Mini 9 and an in-depth look at the compatibility and usability of Mac OS X on the same netbook from Michael Smith and Andy Ihnatko, respectively. Note that the Dell Mini 9 has been discontinued but the Dell Vostro A90 is essentially the same.

Hackintosh Compatible Computers & Parts Listings

You can't just shove a Mac OS X DVD into any old PC and expect it to work like it does on a Mac. Let's face it, given the vast assortment of configurations, you can't put a Windows DVD into any old PC and expect it to work like Mac OS X does on a Mac. Fortunately, many have experimented with Mac OS X on a wide variety of PC hardware and have shared their findings with the world.

The following listings of Hackintosh compatible computers and parts should be helpful:

OSx86 Project - The original wiki that lists desktop and notebook computers, as well as parts, that are compatible with a variety of versions of Mac OS X.

InsanelyMac OSx86 Hardware Database - a spin-off from the OSx86 Project that provides a "comprehensive hardware database of Mac OS X compatible PC components."

OSx86 Library - Another user-compiled database of Mac OS X compatible PC hardware. Also has a very slick "walk through" to select compatible parts for a self-built system.

PCWiz OSx86 Hardware Database - This site reports that it is "designed to be an organized replacement for the Hardware Compatibility List on the OSx86 Project wiki."

Mac OS X Netbook Compatibility Chart - From the Boing Boing Gadgets blog, lists a dozen different netbooks and the compatibility, or lack thereof, of each running Mac OS X.




Hackintosh Communities

There are a number of vibrant and active communities that focus on helping one another to configure, build, and troubleshoot Hackintosh systems as well as hack iPods and iPhones.
